Pre-work:

In this end term project we had to create a 3d replica of the half-cut fruit we picked for our FVL class.

Description:

Oranges have more than just one texture like most fruits. Orange peel is quite smooth, but it has a lot of small divots in it, so it feels somewhat rough at the same time. The inside of the peel is very rough and grainy. The inside of the peel is the polar opposite of the peel from the outside. The orange wedges are wrapped in a thin transparent layer from the outside and filled with small squishy juice vesicles from the inside.

Material used:

The method I used was paper pulping and, the paper I used was cartridge paper for the orange wedges. I used cartridge paper because I didn't really have orange pastel sheets of the right color

plus, I couldn't have added much detail on an orange pastel sheet anyway. I used paper pulping for the peel too, I put a layer of paper pulp on top of the orange itself to get the shape right,

and then I added a layer of tissue on top of the paper pulp to smooth out the texture.

Points for improvement:

I could've added a layer of translucent paper over my wedges. but, since I was going back to my home I didn't have much time to do that.

Form analysis sheet:

In the form analysis sheet, we had to pay attention to every nooks and cranny of our fruit and draw them on the sheet with your preferred medium. The medium I chose was watercolors. I chose watercolor because to grew to really enjoy them after working with them in FVL-2.

Day 2:

For my 3d model, I was fairly confused about what to do, so I just created a simple 3d model with a sunboard of the sphere and added a small bulge at the top. I achieved this 3d model by creating 12 circles of 3 different sizes and making slits on them so I could insert all of the pieces together.

Idea generation:

I first started the idea generation with the whole form by using gestalt. I first started with the whole form because I wanted to start the explorations with the basics and get comfortable with the gestalt theory.

Then, I started exploring more with the gestalts theory and used it on different angles of the orange and half cuts of the form.

I didn't really do that many 3d explorations since I didn't have the materials for it because I moved back to my hometown before starting the end term project.

Idea Development:

From the idea generations, I selected these eight explorations and did further iterations on them by changing the size and number lines in the explorations.

Selected Iterations:

These are the two iterations I selected from the Idea development, I chose these two because one of them is very easy with simple shapes, and the other one is a bit complex with a lot of dots. I wanted my final selection to be diverse that's why I chose these two.

Exploring Colors:

Working on this assignment was probably the most boring task I've done this entire month (no offense) because we've been working on fruits/vegetables for the best four weeks since we just had our FVL before this, But even then, this was just very tedious of a task.

Since I wasn't having much fun doing my assignment, you can see it in my work. There's no passion in it, I'm just simply doing it for the sake of doing it.

One of the things I struggled with while doing this assignment was getting a flat paint of color on the sheet with watercolor.

One of the ways that I've found out you can counter this is by using poster colors

Digital Iterations:

Extracting the colors from the original sheet was fairly easy because you can just use the dropper tool in illustrator to get the right color from the sheet. and since the shape of my fruit is fairly simple, it wasn't that hard to make it in illustrator.
